© Tokuharu Yamada/Studio 500G. At eight Keisho OHNO became the student of a great master, Chikuei TAKAHASHI, himself a disciple of Chikuzan TAKAHASHI, the founder of Tsugaru Shamisen. He was hardly twelve when he was awarded with the title of Natori, allowing him to use the name of his master during his shows.

At fourteen he was accepted among the “Successors of the Chikuzan Bushi Order”.
In 2000 Keishô came to Ôsaka.

In 2004 Keisho started Keisho Ohno with Tsugaru Shamisen SOUL, a band composed of Tsugaru Shamisen, synthesizer, trombone and drums, and launched his career as a musician.
As a Tsugaru Shamisen player he finds inspiration in the traditional techniques, also opposing to his master Chikuzan by creating a new style of music which brings a new spirit to Shamisen.
As a Tsugaru Shamisen player, Keisho OHNO both keeps the tradition alive and creates an original style by collaborating with artists of various musical genres. His originality attracts the attention of the audience more and more.

Shamisen

The Shamisen was invented in Okinawa during the Edo period. The Shamisen culture soon expanded all over Japan. It developed especially in the region of Tsugaru, well known for its harsh winters.

It is a very subtle instrument with three silk strings which may slacken or retract depending on the temperature.
Its handle is different from a guitar handle. The use of a sharp plectrum reminds the way percussion instruments are played. The instrument weighs about 7 kilos.
