On the Tatami: demonstrations
and initiations to Aikidô

Aikidô
Aikidô is part of the martial path (Budô). This art was founded in the 40s by Master Morihei UESHIBA (1883-1969) who was taught by the greatest Japanese martial art masters at the time and who trained hard all his life.
Before the age of 30, O’ Sensei already knew the traditional arm techniques, such as the spear (Naginata), the sword (Ken), the stick (Jo), as well as bare hand control techniques (Jû-jitsu).
Aikidô only got to Europe in the early 50s and developed in France when Nobuyoshi TAMURA came here.

A discipline for everyone
Aikidô is a search for the optimum balance of the individual, with himself and his environment. Anyone can practice this discipline according to his/her physical capacities. Aikidô is open to everyone, men and women alike, young and older people alike.
There is no need for physical force in Aikidô. Its efficiency relies on movements and muscle relaxation, which allows a better circulation of energy, the Ki.
Aikidô uses bare hand techniques, projection and immobilization to make the opponent(s) lose his/her (their) balance and master them. It can also use Atemi (punches and kicks in vital places of the body. Aikidô also uses weapons such as the sword (Boken), the stick (Jo) and the knife (Tanto).
Yet, Aikidô is not a fighting sport: it’s a martial art which excludes the idea of competition. As a complete physical and moral discipline, Aikidô allows to acquire perfect self-control, assuring a harmonious development of the body.
