Taiko

Taiko means drums in Japanese. As a part of traditions, Taiko is usually made of a hollowed out Keyaki trunk, Keyaki being a tree with very hard wood. It accompanies and Kabuki performances (two genres of Japanese theatre) since the Middle Ages, as well as celebrations in temples and sanctuaries, or traditional celebrations. Taiko is very popular nowadays, in Japan as well as abroad.

The dynamics of the body is very important when playing Taiko which is sometimes considered as a “way”, like martial arts. Taiko is sometimes defined as music, meditation, dancing or a martial art.
