Kintsugi

The area of the General Consulate of Japan in Marseille invites you to discover an ancestral art of restoration on ceramics, the kintsugi!

PRESENTATION

Kintsugi is a Japanese restoration technique on broken pottery from the 15th century. The word kintsugi comes from the Japanese kin "gold" and tsugi "jointure". The art of kintsugi, in other words the kintsukuroi, means "accommodation with gold". So, this technique allows to repair an object by highlighting broken joints with gold powder. The golden colour accentuates the cracks of ceramics and porcelain.

The pieces of the broken object are gathered to be cleaned and glued with natural lacquer from the lacquer tree. The object is set to dry then sanded. When dry, the cracks are covered with gold powder or other metals.

The General Consulate of Japan in Marseille invites you to attend kintsugi demonstrations to admire this ancestral art!
