Presentation

Marseille’s friendship with Japan, and more specifically with the city of Kobe, has led to the creation in 2011 of a “Japanese garden” that rests in the botanical garden of the city (jardin botanique Edouard-Marie Heckel). At the upcoming edition of Japan Expo Sud, Marseille is inviting you to visit a vegetal set spread over 100sqm, inspired from the Japanese art of gardens and celebrating spring!

Dating back to the Nara period in the 8th century, the tradition of “flower viewing” (hanami) is the ritual act of contemplating cherry blossom (sakura) in early spring. This is an important time of celebration for the Japanese who get together and picnic in parks under cheery trees on this occasion.

Program

Come stroll in the Japanese garden and try the free activities organized all three days:

  • sakura no ki (cherry tree) activities with a tree that you will make blossom by making paper flowers in origami (the art of folding paper) or kirie (the art of cutting paper)
  • negai no ki activities, a wish tree

The city of Marseille is inviting you on a journey of discovery of Japanese culture: come get on board with us!
