Taiko, or wadaiko – Japanese traditional drums – is powerful and stirring. This instrument dates back to the 6th century. The instrument was used for religious rituals, before it accompanied nô and kabuki theatres. Taiko is also used during fishing or agriculture festivals. Around 1960, it was put up to date, blending ancient and new music.
On the occasion of the 160th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between France and Japan, Japan Expo Sud is inviting you to enjoy taiko and traditional music shows and to learn the basics of taiko.
Coming from Japan, the taiko group SEN will be joining the French group LYU TAIKO with pieces from yesterday to today, blending taiko, shinobue (traditional bamboo flute), ocarina, and chanchiki (small metal gong).
